Residents

For independent living for local retired people of limited means (and with a qualifying connection).

The College is an Almshouse in a unique Grade 1 listed building (1609). Accommodation for Residents includes single occupancy bedsits, small flats.  Residents must be able bodied and capable of looking after themselves. There is no nursing care available on site.

The flats and bedsits all have views over the College grounds and residents have the use of the Common Room, often meeting there to have tea and chat. A communal laundry room is available with washing machine and dryer with washing lines in the Residents’ garden.

The criteria to become a Resident have not changed much since the founding of the Almshouse in 1609. Prospective residents should be of limited means, have a qualifying connection with East Grinstead, fit for independent living and be between 60 and 80 years of age at the time of applying, regrettably no pets .  The College is a non smoking establishment. Residents are required to attend the College Chapel for a service held by the College Chaplain Rev. Andrew Hawken four times a year.

Living in East Grinstead

Our ancient market town has a wealth of architectural heritage and is surrounded by some of the finest countryside in the whole of the South East of England.

Situated 20 minutes from Gatwick Airport and an hour from both London and the South Coast, it is an ideal base from which to explore the counties of Kent, Surrey and Sussex. With Ashdown Forest, home to Winnie-the-Pooh, and a wealth of famous houses, gardens, sporting activities, vineyards, fine dining and country hotels nearby, there is truly something for everyone.

Our magnificent Historic High Street, a conservation area, is full of timber framed Tudor and Medieval buildings with an interesting mix of independent shops, bars and cafes.
